hagel. the president's choice to succeed leon panetta as the next secretary of defense. hagel faces questions from the 26-member panel and at least three republicans on this committee have already said they won't support him including the ranking senator james inhofe. he made that clear in his opening statement. now it is extremely rare for presidential nominees not to be confirmed, are and are senator dick durbin, the senate whip, said all 55 members of the senate democratic caucus will vote for him. so, in order to break the filibuster, he'd need the support of just five republicans. and one republican senator, thad cochrane, has expressed his support. let's bring in "time" magazine's assistant med tore and "washington post" columnist and msnbc contributor. we've already gotten a little preview as we heard from inhofe what some of the discussion is going to be about. what are you looking for here, e.j.? >> first of all, i think hagel is actually in pretty good shape. i think a critical event in this whole battle was when he met with senator chuck schumer and schumer gave his bless
that goes on occasionally, e.j., when we see confirmation of defense secretary, whether or not combat experience makes you better at this. he is obviously a decorated vietnam veteran. but i'm wondering how that will inform how he answers these questions today and what kind of defense secretary he would be. >> first of all, i want to say something. his views aren't extreme and chuck schumer would not endorse somebody, his views on foreign policy are middle of the road. he wouldn't endorse somebody who was extreme. i think his vietnam experience is important. it's been noted and it's important that you now have at state john kerry and you would have at defense chuck hagel, two veterans of vietnam who look back and say we are ib clind to be very cautious before we commit american lives to any kind of foreign intervention. we want to be able to tell the troops. and hagel has characterized himself as an old sergeant, wants to tell the truth, so we need to make this fight. i think the good thing this hearing if it went there instead of just kind of particular attacks or questions to hagel,
was because of hurricane sandy. but it was also because of big cuts in defense spending. >>> we also learned yesterday that members of the president's job council are out of a job. the council had a two-year charter that will not be renewed. this morning, speaker john boehner said this is the wrong time for president obama to scrap his jobs council and delay his budget. month after month, we see the same thing, high unemployment and even more debt. the white house knew this criticism was coming. >> when we hear some of the somewhat ridiculous criticisms about this, they come from people on capitol hill who have consistently opposed every growth initiative and job creation initiative the president has put forward. >> i want to bring in "washington post" political reporter karen tumelty and michael crowley. good morning. >> nice to be here. >> he asked the chairman of the white house council on economic advisers if washington is the biggest problem, including the sequester. here's what he said. >> this is something that the president has provided a plan. the sequester is bad policy. it's somet
we want to protect people who have self-defense, we want to protect against a tie ran cal government. >> we need to take the statements now, you see the chairman of the committee, patrick leahy and among those seated at the table, gabby giffords and wayne lapierre. let's listen for a bit. >> gabby giffords is going to give a brief message. and captain kelly, thank you for your help in bringing your wife here. miss giffords. >> okay. thank you for inviting me here today. this is an important conversation for our children, for our communities, for democrats and republicans. speaking is difficult but i need to say something important. violence is a big problem. too many children are dying. too many children. we must do something. it will be hard but the time is now. you must act. be bold, be courageous. americans are counting on you. thank you. >> captain kelly, you want to help miss giffords out and i'll give you a few moments and -- >> gabby giffords with words that cannot fail to move you as she struggles with speech. the shooting in tucson, she was shot at point blank range and wort
half of it is defense. that is a huge, huge cut to defense. but it's actually worse than that for republicans. medicaid is completely protected from the sequester. social security, completely protected. most low-income programs, completely protected. medicaid beneficiaries, completely protected. veterans benefits, completely protected. pell grants, completely protected. so the sequester is these large spending cuts, but they mostly protect the core democratic priorities, and they concentration incredibly heavily on the spending republicans care about most. and that is because republicans cut this deal in order to not have tax increases in the sequester. so the idea that republicans can trade the democrats for a new sequester that has spending cuts democrats prefer, is ludicrous. the only thing that could trade the sequester for is something that includes tax increases, because the whole point of the sequester in the first place was, they couldn't find spending cuts democrats liked better. >> and in fact, talking points memo argues that gop leaders have changed their tune
in the overcrowded club. >>> israel moving one of its iron dome missile defense batteries to its border with syria. it could be a game changer if chemical weapons are obtained by terrorists such as hezbollah or al qaeda. israel could launch a preemptive strike. >>> new revelations this morning in the 16-year-old murder of jonbenet ramsey. we're learning a grand jury did vote to indict. the district attorney did not prosecute. jury members spoke to an online colorado newspaper under the condition that they remain anonymous. >>> police are investigating singer chris brown for his possible involvement in a fight in west hollywood parking lot. witnesses say he was arguing over a parking space when he alleged punched the victim. brown has a history of issues including an attack in 2009 on his then girlfriend rihanna and a brawl at a new york nightclub late last year. >>> a crazy stunt at the x games last night, watch this, could have been a major disaster. check this out. the australian lost control of his snow mobile during a back flip. ouch. he managed to land away from it but the vehicle sped off on
